My First Kiss

I wish I could remember how old we were

or what grade we were in

3rd? 5th?

I just wanted to get it right for you tonight

on your birthday

The fat pine tree that anchored your back when I leaned in

The incense of sun-baked needles

under our feet

The roundness of your child’s lips

closed and warm

It wasn’t a kiss so much as a shock of gravity that

I was too small to be in

“You ran away to tell your friends,”

you said to me

that night you reached out to me

after all those years

“You were the first girl I ever kissed.”

Two years later I heard you were gone

It wasn’t my place to know how or why

We had recess together

and that is enough

Recess…

A small period of time when everything else is temporarily suspended

That’s what you gave me then and

that’s what you give me now

I’m not too small anymore

for your gravity

–Happy Birthday Jason Dublin. You matter.–

Memory is precious. Something I will never take for granted again. I thought about him all day and night on his birthday. Praying he knows now how much he will always matter. Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts here. Love you woman!
